Colt Ar15 Serial Numbers Sp1
Just picked up a colt sp 1 carbine. Any ideas as to born on date? Also it has a teardrop forward assist a1 sights & flash hider. I'm thinking some one changed the upper with a later model.
Note: All SP1 serial numbers start with SP, not SP1. If you see a 1 there, it does belong to the serial number. Early SP1s were marked 'Colt's Patent Firearms' Later SP1s were marked 'Colt's Firearms Division' Below are examples of early and late SP1 serial numbers and roll marks:. Jun 07, 2015 Hey Guys, I picked up a minty Colt SP1 this weekend and its serial number is SP130419, Ive looked on line and had no luck with date of manufacture, can someone please.
It is a colt w/1-7 twist 5.56 nato cmpc on the barrel. Any help appreciated. I think you have an SP- 2 model - not an SP-1. Dizionario Ceco Italiano Pdf Reader here.
The SP-2 models were made in the 1980's after the Army went to the M-855 round hence the faster twist and bolt assist. The SP-1 'Horsey' models were the original 'plain Jane' AR-15's with 1-12' barrels intended for the lighter 55gr M-193 round. My SP-1 which had the Horsey logo and a 'SP' serial number is a 46XXX which dates to 1976 and is much lower than your 6 digit one which was made after.
This is the approx. Colt 1x7 twist barrel time line as I understand it: 1977-79: DOD was trying to improve performance with the then standard 1x12 twist barrels by upgrading the ammunition (XM777). 1981: LCAAP made their first run of XM855E1 FN ammunition using the FN SS-109 bullet. WCC followed with their 'PENETRATOR' 5.56MM ammunition marked 'FOR USE IN 7 INCH TWIST BARREL'.
1984-85: 1x7 twist rifles were evaluated then delivered to the USMC as the M16A2. 1985-86: Colt was liquidating their inventory of obsolete AR15/M16/M16A1 parts by using them on LE/commercial rifles and carbines. This was the first time I saw a Colt 1x7 twist barrel.
Here is a prime example: Colt M16A2 model 723 carbine manufactured in 1985 with tear drop side assist Vietnam era 'CH' forge marked Colt/Harvey M16A1 upper & early vinyl coated aluminum stock. The 14.5' pencil weight barrel with A2 flash hider is marked 'C MP 5.56 NATO 1/7'. In 1985, Colt was making a semi-auto version of this model 723 called the AR15A2 model R6420. An active duty USMC Major confirmed that the USMC did take delivery of a handful of similar cobbled together M16A2 model 733 11.5' carbines. They may have had the later FiberLite stock; not sure on that.
